Charlton Tavern: Reviews & Ratings
My husband and I enjoyed a wonderful dinner out here just a couple of days before Christmas. It is absolutely gorgeously decorated for the holiday and a must to experience. What a great festive and cozy atmosphere! There was so much to look at while waiting for our food. We had a reservation, arrived a few minutes early, and were still seated right away. Our waitress was lovely and also made sure our orders went in quickly as a very large party was seated nearby only a few minutes after us. She checked on us just often enough and was helpful and warm. Now, onto the food. Our last time here was close to ten years ago and I have no idea why. We don't live nearby, but it really is such a great place that I added to our date night list we have made. If you order a salad make sure to ask for the warm onion house dressing. I know it sounds crazy to put a warm dressing on a salad, but I promise it's amazing. We were starving so we also opted to start with the poutine while waiting for our meals. Crispy fries, lots of melty cheese, and gravy. What's not to love? I chose the Haddock and Mac special - I wish this was on the regular menu! Homemade mac and cheese that I let the husband sample and delicious beer battered fish. Perfectly crispy outside and tender fish inside. It's so hard to find good fried fish and it will be hard to try another meal next time we are here. The husband ordered the Guiness Braised brisket. He enjoyed it, but said he would try something else next time. To finish off the meal, we split a slice of peanut butter pie. I was so full already but it was totally worth it. Absolutely a must try restaurant even if it's a drive as it was for us. Great hospitality and service, a warm and cozy place to spend some time, and really good food for an amazing price.
A cozy, hometown feel is what makes this restaurant such a wonderful place to gather with loved ones and friends. The decor is warm, welcoming and comfy thanks to two fireplaces and a lovely natural barn wood decor. A family-feeling atmosphere is due to the kind hearts of the owners (Sue and Mike), the serving staff, and bartender (Jack). They make you feel known, valued and appreciated. I arrived around 4:15 PM to watch the game and have a beer and a meal. I did not have reservations and was easily seated solo at the bar, but I would recommend making a reservation if you arrive later than that or come with a guests. It did fill up! During my Sunday visit, the football game was on at the bar and live acoustic music was playing in the main dining room. There was a moderate noise level, but it was not overwhelming. It was easy to carry on and hear conversation. The food is always amazing – all freshly prepared, not sitting in a steamer. The meal attached is the meatloaf with smashed potatoes and fresh vegetables. Oh! And you can’t forget a wonderful Irish beer! Thoroughly enjoyed it here!
The Charlton Tavern has a rustic pub charm vibe throughout. The French Onion Soup is outstanding!! We went on a Tuesday (not super busy) night for dinner, we had reservations (which I highly recommend). Three of us orders burgers, which were cooked to perfection, fries and onion rings. The other two in our party ordered fried haddock, perfect crispy outside with a great crunch. Chocolate Mousse (smoothie, rich and creamy) and Chocolate lava cake (decadent chocolate lovers treat) for dessert rounded out our meal. Definitely plan to go back to experience more of their menu.
Went there twice during the Christmas season. Beautifully decorated, rustic decor, and hearty meals. Definitely recommend!
Truly a hidden Gem. I have been to many restaurants across this country. This location has a very unique comforting appeal in many ways. The owners are beautiful and friendly, the staff is very nice and attentive, the food is fresh and prepared with love and tastes so good. This has become our favorite Gem to visit and enjoy as much as possible. Very highly recommend… est 1969, truly amazing !
Food was tasty and drinks got delivered very quickly. Atmosphere was cozy but a little bit too loud. Waitress refilled our bread baskets when they got low. Even though the diner was busy, the waitress seated us very fast and delivered our food quickly
French onion soup is AMAZING and the ruben sandwich is very tasty too. Unfortunately the calamari was a bit overcooked BUT when the owner come over to simply ask how everything was and I mentioned it, he wisked it away and returned with a different appetizer- no questions asked. That is the type of service that has kept this local hometown restaurant tops in my book. Would hands down recommend The Charlton Tavern any day of the week.
We went for my birthday, a big party, 10+ people. Everything was excellent from start to finish. We ordered Appetizers, Steaks, Specials, Clams, Calamari and even dessert. The appetizers did not disappoint, loved the fancy green beans. My NY Strip was cooked perfectly and the Prime Rib too. We ate EVERYTHING just about. My mom loved the Chicken ala Charlton. The service was great, we had full drinks throughout, food was timed well. We stayed a little past closing and didn't feel pushed out. 10/10 would dine again. Glad I picked this place. Thanks Charlton House for a perfect birthday dinner
